VAGINISMUS
IN NEW YORK CITY
Vaginismus is a condition that causes involuntary vaginal spasms when attempting to insert something into the vagina. It can prevent sex, and can even prevent a woman from using a tampon. Vaginismus is thought to be primarily a psychological condition, but there are various treatments that can help to relax the vagina and allow penetrative sex again.
What Causes Vaginismus?
Vaginismus and vaginal spasms can be caused by a number of both mental and physical issues, including:
-
Past sexual trauma
-
Emotional issues
-
Menopause
-
Painful sex
-
Radiation treatment
Vaginismus is a psychological condition, but in some cases there may be a physical cause that led to its development. For instance, menopause can make sexual relations painful because of a lack of natural vaginal lubrication and elasticity. This can in turn lead to vaginismus.
Vaginismus is sometimes confused with another condition called dyspareunia, which is the scientific term for constantly painful sex. Dyspareunia can have a number of physical causes, including cysts or pelvic inflammatory disease.
Treatment for Vaginismus
There are a wide range of treatments that can be used to help treat vaginismus. These can include:
-
Therapy
-
Sexual counseling
-
Vaginal dilators
-
BOTOX®
-
Kegel exercises
Some women may need a combination of treatments over time to find relief. We can help you find the best treatment combination for your unique situation.
Botox™ for Vaginal Spasms
We offer BOTOX® treatment for vaginal spasms. Although its most well-known use is for reducing facial wrinkles, BOTOX® is a proven effective treatment to help relax the pelvic floor muscles in order to reduce involuntary spasms. In fact, BOTOX® was originally used to help treat facial spasms before its cosmetic uses were discovered.
BOTOX® treatment for vaginimus is safe and effective when performed by an experienced cosmetic gynecologist. The treatment itself is painless, as we will numb the injection area beforehand.
BOTOX® injections are temporary, and results can last anywhere from six months to a year. You may need to have a follow-up treatment after the effects wear off, although for some women just one treatment can help to overcome their vaginismus and they do not need a second treatment.
BOTOX® can also be used for other issues such as urinary incontinence, urinary retention, and anal spasms.
