“Victoria’s Secret has a problem and it’s not much of a secret” reports The Wall Street Journal. In a recent exposé, the newspaper details how “athleisure is upending the bra business.” Best known for their sexy ads, sultry women, and bust-enhancing bras, the lingerie giant is struggling to relate to the modern women. Quoting one analyst, the paper writes that “there’s a move toward [a] more natural look.”
Athleisure blurs the lines between lingerie, active wear, and outerwear while remaining feminine and pretty.
Just as there has been “a fundamental shift in what female consumers want from their undergarments,” there has also been a change in what women want their bodies to reflect. More and more, women of all ages are less concerned about looking “overtly sexy and much more focused on being natural.”
Breast Augmentation Is as Popular as Ever
It may seem like this recent shift would hurt the cosmetic surgery industry, but on the contrary, women continue to choose to enhance their figure with the help of breast implants just as much as they had in the past. Breast augmentation remains the number one surgical procedure for younger women (ages 19 to 34) and is the second most requested surgical procedure for women of all ages (second only to liposuction).
What Women Want Now
What has changed is what women are hoping to achieve through their breast augmentation. Whereas prominent, over-sized, and unnaturally shaped breasts were once the trend, women now seek to subtly enhance their silhouette—opting instead for smaller, proportionate, and naturally-shaped implants. Instead of wanting their breasts to dominate their appearance, women are requesting that their breast augmentation be balanced with their figure.
