What Is Microneedling?

If you haven’t heard of microneedling, you may be missing out on a life-changing skin treatment. Microneedling, sometimes referred to as “collagen induction therapy,” is an anti-aging and beautifying treatment that allows you to address multiple skin concerns at once, no matter your skin type.

So what is microneedling? How does the process work? What are the benefits? We have answers to your questions about microneedling sessions and the advantages this treatment offers.

How Does Microneedling Work? Using the Body’s Healing Process to Your Advantage

Along with skin cells, your skin contains collagen and elastin fibers. These fibers keep your face smooth and tight when you’re younger. Starting in your late 20s, however, collagen and elastin production decline.

A lack of collagen and elastin can lead to fine lines, wrinkles, uneven texture, and other signs of aging. These skin concerns are nothing to be ashamed of, but if you want your dream complexion, the microneedling procedure is here to help.

Micro-Injuries for Skin Rejuvenation

What is microneedling, and what can it do for you? During a microneedling procedure, we use a specialized device that creates tiny holes in the epidermis layer of the skin to stimulate your body’s wound-healing process. These micro-injuries are very small. You receive a local anesthetic before the treatment.

Over the next few weeks, your skin will rapidly produce collagen and elastin to heal the small wound channels created during your microneedling session. After multiple sessions, your skin texture and tone improve, smoothing fine lines and reducing the appearance of scars.

What to Expect During Your Microneedling Session in NYC

Microneedling in NYC is a great way to treat yourself and achieve skin radiance! Once you’ve consulted one of our aestheticians or medical professionals, you can schedule your first microneedling appointment.

However, you should wait to schedule microneedling treatments if you’re experiencing any of the following:

  • Pregnancy

  • Nursing

  • Active, aggressive breakouts

  • Skin infections

  • Flare-ups of inflammatory skin conditions (such as psoriasis or eczema)

  • Illness

Your body needs to be at its best to heal your skin for optimal results.

Step 1: Anesthetic

While the needles in the microneedling device are tiny, your comfort is our top priority. We apply an anesthetic numbing cream to all treatment areas before starting the treatment. Once the anesthetic takes effect, we’ll clean the appropriate areas of your skin and get started.

Step 2: Microneedling

Microneedling sessions take anywhere from 30 minutes to an hour, depending on the treatment areas covered. Thanks to the numbing cream, you shouldn’t feel much discomfort from the tiny needles.

Step 3: Aftercare

There is no downtime associated with microneedling procedures. However, you’ll need to follow aftercare instructions to avoid damaging your skin or prolonging the healing process.

Some important steps include:

  • Applying moisturizer as needed

  • Avoiding harsh treatments (such as chemical peels or laser treatments) until your skin is healed

  • Wearing sunscreen every day

  • Reapplying sunscreen every two hours when you’re outdoors

  • Avoiding sun exposure as much as possible

  • Avoiding makeup for a few days afterward

Within a few days, any redness should fade. You’ll then see steady improvements over the following weeks.

Step 4: Touch-Up Appointments

Microneedling typically requires four to six sessions to produce ideal results. This varies depending on the severity of your skin concerns. After your initial treatment, we’ll evaluate your skin’s progress and book your follow-up appointments as necessary. You can even do microneedling yearly to keep up your new youthful complexion!

Professional Microneedling Benefits: Universal Skin Rejuvenation

Microneedling is considered a universal skin procedure. This means it’s beneficial for most skin types, skin tones, and skin concerns. Almost anyone can reap the benefits of this skin rejuvenation treatment.

Reduced Scarring (Acne Scars and Stretch Marks)

Stretch marks are long scars that appear when your skin has stretched beyond its breaking point. This can happen due to pregnancy, weight gain, and genetics.

Both acne scars and stretch marks interfere with the even skin tone you’re trying to achieve. Microneedling breaks up stubborn scar tissue and replaces it with new collagen and elastin fibers, effectively evening out your complexion.

After a few sessions, scars and stretch marks should be much less noticeable. Some even fade completely!

Fewer Fine Lines and Wrinkles

Along with injectables, microneedling is another great tool for reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles on your skin. The small punctures made by the microneedling device trigger the production of elastin and collagen, which keep your skin tight and free of age lines. Over time, microneedling can give you a more youthful appearance.

Corrected Hyperpigmentation

Hyperpigmentation includes conditions like melasma and age spots. These dark spots on your skin can make you look older than you are.

The benefits of microneedling for faces of all skin tones are impressive. Uneven pigmentation affects everyone, but many traditional skin care treatments haven’t benefitted people with dark skin. For folks with darker skin tones, this treatment can reduce hyperpigmentation to give your skin a more uniform appearance.

Smooth, Rejuvenated Skin

Microneedling gets rid of uneven skin textures created by acne scars and other problems. As the tiny wound channels heal, your body refreshes those areas with new skin, creating a smoother, more youthful texture.

You can also add serums like PDRN with growth factors and other beneficial ingredients to your microneedling treatment, which further improves your results!

Trustworthy and Effective

Home microneedling is not recommended. It comes with risks and downsides that professional treatments do not. Products like at-home dermarollers can do more harm than good.

With specialized training, years of experience, and the latest in skin care technology, our team of medical professionals will help you achieve your skin goals. You can trust that in-office professional microneedling works.
