Dysport Treatment: Everything You Need to Know From Preparation to Aftercare

When people think of neuromodulators, they tend to picture the most famous option, Botox. There are other excellent choices, however, including Dysport.

Dysport injections target the fine lines and wrinkles that make you look older than you are — and you can enjoy these benefits with just a quick appointment. What is Dysport, and how can it make a difference in your appearance?

What Is Dysport?

Dysport is a cosmetic injectable made from botulinum toxin that prevents muscles in the treatment area from contracting. The injections temporarily interrupt the signals that your brain sends to these muscles, allowing your skin to have a softer and smoother appearance.

Like Botox, Dysport is used to reduce dynamic wrinkles. Dynamic wrinkles form as you age and your body no longer produces the same level of collagen as it did in your youth. Collagen helps your skin remain flexible, firm, and hydrated. With too little collagen, your skin can’t bounce back effectively. Every time you smile or frown, small creases and fine lines begin to form.

Neuromodulators relax the facial muscles at the injection site, reducing the appearance of creases. They’re good options for treating frown lines, forehead lines, crow’s feet, and other wrinkles.

Dysport vs. Botox: What’s the Difference?

Although Botox and Dysport are made from the same neurotoxin, there are differences in the composition and uses of these injectables.

One of these is that Botox has received FDA approval for the treatment of a variety of facial wrinkles. Dysport has been approved for glabellar lines, though it’s commonly used off-label to treat many other types of wrinkles.

The costs of Dysport vs. Botox vary. Dysport tends to be more affordable than Botox, though treatment costs depend on the provider. It offers faster results than its more famous counterpart, too; you could start seeing a difference within just a few days. With Botox, you would have to wait up to a month for the full effect.

Additionally, the effects of Dysport can last longer, with results visible for up to five months. With Botox, you would typically need another treatment after three months.

When deciding between Botox and Dysport, ask your provider which option they recommend for your specific needs.

Dysport in NYC: What to Expect From the Consultation

Before you can receive Dysport in NYC, you will need to schedule a consultation with your provider. They will assess whether you are a good candidate for these injections. Good candidates include people who:

  • Aren’t pregnant or nursing

  • Aren’t allergic to Dysport’s ingredients

  • Have frown lines

  • Are looking for an alternative to Botox

  • Can follow pretreatment and aftercare instructions

  • Are between the ages of 18 and 64

Your provider will ask for your medical history as well as a list of all of the medications you take. Make sure to let them know if you are on blood thinners or if you have an allergy to milk.

Preparing for Dysport Injections

To prepare for the injections, you should avoid taking blood-thinning medications such as ibuprofen, as well as supplements that function as anticoagulants, like fish oil and vitamin E. These can increase your risk of bruising or bleeding at the injection site. If needed, ask your medical provider for approval to stop taking these medications a few days before the procedure.

Stop drinking alcohol and smoking for at least a week before the injections to lower your risk of developing bleeding issues or infections. Remember, smoking slows down the healing process.

When you go to your appointment, don’t wear makeup or skin care products. Your provider will cleanse your skin before the injections, but it’s always best to go with a bare face.

You can expect the injections to take just a few moments. Often, people get Dysport on their lunch break because of how fast the process is and how minor the side effects are.

Dysport Aftercare

You don’t have to worry about downtime with Dysport injections, but it’s important to avoid touching or massaging the treatment areas for the first few hours. You also should avoid strenuous activity, saunas, alcohol, and taking blood thinners for a number of days. If possible, avoid sun exposure, too. If you do have to be outside, wear sunscreen to protect the extra sensitive areas.

If you feel discomfort during the first hours post-treatment, you can use an ice pack. Don’t apply heat or pressure to the injection sites, though. It’s a good idea to avoid any other cosmetic treatments until your skin has recovered from the injections.

Another important way to prepare for Dysport aftercare is to learn the potential side effects. You could feel minor pain or discomfort at the injection site, and some people also experience a mild rash. Headaches aren’t uncommon, and if you get Dysport on your forehead or around the eyes, you may experience eyelid swelling.

Dysport lasts a number of months, and there are things you can do to extend the results. Good skin care can go a long way toward helping you with this goal. Begin a skincare routine that includes gentle cleansings and the application of moisturizers. Consistently wearing sunscreen is also important.
