Breast implant revision is usually performed on women who are experiencing a complication with one or both of their implants or who are displeased by the look or feel of their augmented breasts. Breast revision is a highly customizable procedure tailored exactly to your needs. Dr. Claudia Kim will address all of your breast implant concerns and work diligently to restore the beauty and comfort of your breasts. You can choose to exchange your breast implants for ones of a different size, shape, or texture, or you can opt to remove your breast implants permanently.

Breast revision is performed under general anesthesia for your comfort and safety and involves the removal (and often replacement) of your breast implants. An incision is made along the inframammary fold or around the areola to remove the breast implant and surrounding scar tissue. Usually, Dr. Claudia Kim will use your initial breast augmentation (https://www.newlooknewlife.com/breast-augmentation)incision. If your implants are being exchanged, the new implants will be inserted into the existing breast pockets. If you have decided not to replace your implants, your breast pockets will be tightened, and the incisions closed.

Because breast revision is often sought by women who have had their original implants for some time, a breast lift (https://www.newlooknewlife.com/breast-lift)is often recommended. A breast lift raises and restores youthfulness to drooping breasts by removing excess skin, tightening the underlying tissues, and repositioning the nipple-areola complex. Breast revision is an outpatient procedure, meaning you can return home to begin your recovery the same day. You can expect to experience some bruising, swelling, tenderness, and general discomfort. A compression garment will be wrapped around your chest to protect the incisions, reduce swelling, promote blood circulation, and ensure the new implants heal in the correct place. You will see Dr. Claudia Kim for a follow-up appointment 24 hours after your surgery and again one to seven days later. Most breast revision patients return to work within a week. You must avoid heavy lifting, running, or vigorous exercise for at least seven to 10 days.

While there is no official length of time required between an initial breast surgery and secondary breast surgery, patients should wait until their bodies have healed completely (usually at least 6 to 12 months) to best evaluate their results before undergoing a revision.

The results of your breast revision will be apparent immediately after the surgery and will continue to improve as the bruising and swelling subside. Most women realize their beautiful, final results after a few weeks.

Every patient ages differently depending on lifestyle and genetic factors. While your new breast implants will be long-lasting, they are not necessarily permanent. You may eventually develop additional implant complications or breast sagging as the years go on.

You will need to stop taking any blood-thinning medication (like aspirin, ibuprofen, NSAIDs) and some herbal supplements to reduce the risk of excessive bleeding. You will also need to quit smoking for at least 10 to 14 days before and after your surgery. You will need to ask a family member or friend to drive you to and from our surgical center and help with day-to-day activities for the first 24 to 48 hours.

Breast revision is considered to be very safe, especially when performed by a highly qualified surgeon like Dr. Claudia Kim. While rare, potential complications include adverse reactions to anesthesia, bleeding/hematoma, infection, seroma, changes in nipple sensation, or unfavorable scarring.

While there is no way to eliminate risk entirely, you can significantly reduce your chances by closely following all of Dr. Claudia Kim's pre- and post-operative instructions. Placing the implant under the muscle may also reduce the risk of capsular contracture.

Breast implants are not now and have never been linked to an increased risk of breast cancer, and implants will not prevent breast cancer testing (mammograms). Specific types of textured implants have been linked to a rare condition (BIA-ALCL) that develops in the scar tissue surrounding the implants, but when discovered early, it can be treated by removing the implant and scar tissue capsule.
