Dr. Claudia Kim performs every breast reduction according to her patient's specific needs. Breast reduction usually takes between two and four hours to complete. This outpatient procedure will be performed at our state-of-the-art Manhattan surgical center.

Breast reduction surgery is usually performed using the anchor (inverted-T) technique. This involves a series of incisions that run around the areola, down the lower pole of the breast, and across the inframammary fold (breast crease beneath the breast). Excess breast tissue is removed from the top and sides of the breast to reach the ideal size and shape. Dr. Claudia Kim will then reposition and center the breast tissue and nipples to achieve a youthful, lifted placement.

Breast reduction surgery is almost always performed in combination with a breast lift when there is significant volume reduction. Breast lift surgery uses the same incisions as a breast reduction and is performed to tighten the remaining breast tissue and remove excess skin. Together, these breast enhancement surgeries allow for a lighter, more compact, lifted, and firmer breast appearance.

You can rest in our comfortable post-operative suite before going home with a friend or family member. You will need help for the first 24 to 48 hours, and we are available to answer any questions or concerns during your recovery. We understand that our Manhattan patients have busy lifestyles and schedules, and you will likely be able to return to work after week one. You will need to get plenty of rest and avoid putting a strain on your new breasts. Avoid bending, stretching, lifting, and running until told otherwise. You will have a follow-up appointment at New Look New Life the day after your breast reduction and again one week later. Bruising, swelling, and scarring will fade over the following weeks and months, and nipple sensation will return gradually.

Breast reduction is performed under general anesthesia to prevent any pain during surgery. Any post-operative discomfort can be alleviated with a prescription or over-the-counter pain medication like TYLENOL®.

Some scarring will be concealed in the darker pigment of the areolas, while others will fade over time. Most women find that dealing with breast reduction scars is a worthwhile trade-off for eliminating the physical and emotional discomfort of overly large breasts.

These will include quitting smoking and avoiding medications that thin the blood (such as NSAIDs, aspirin, Advil®, Aleve®, and some herbal supplements) for at least 10 to 14 days. You will also need to arrange for time off of work and your daily obligations.

These complications include reactions to the anesthesia, bleeding, infections, prolonged wound healing, seroma, or temporary numbness of the nipples. Potential aesthetic complications include poor scarring or breast asymmetry. You can significantly reduce your risk of these complications by strictly following your surgeon's post-operative instructions.

Breast reduction involves the removal of tissue surrounding the milk ducts. Therefore, it is very possible that the ducts can be damaged during the procedure, thus limiting your ability to breastfeed. While this is not a problem for every woman, it is a potential complication.
